Hi SuziQ, thanks for the advise, I've decided not to take the supplements, but I've been taking the probiotic.  Everyone seems to think the probiotic is safe.  I'll check consumer digest about the supplements for after the tx.  I've had Hep C for about 40 yrs. n I've tried interferon twice n it did not work, plus I have cirrhosis so I really hope this Harvoni works.  Have a great day!

And thank you again,

Kelly

Hi Kelly,

I did a clinical trial and NO herbs were allowed.  Neither were any antacids.  Prior to my trial, I took ALA, berberine (for my diabetes) and several other supplements. As I posted you, I have recently returned to my supplements.  I had the beginning of diabetic neuropathy and the supplements are helping a lot.  The clinical director for my trial believes that her groups did so well--all reached SVR--because they did not take supplements during the trial.  She is not against supplements except during treatment.  I took supplements for about 6 years before treatment.  My labs stayed just above normal and my viral load was only 800,000 at the beginning of treatment.  When you return to supplements, you can check out consumer digest for purity.

Good luck on your treatment.

SuziQ

Hi Kelly,

Here are some links on supplementation. The probiotic is probably fine, if your doctor says it's okay. The rest I would stay away from until you're finished. Much of it just provides a placebo effect and since there is no FDA control over them, the doses listed on the packages are often woefully less than advertised. If you spend the money, buy them from reputible sources. You get what you pay for applies in this case. Ultimately the choice is yours, choose wisely Kelly...

I'm going to find some resource info for you, but in the meantime, I do not recommend you take any supplements at all. You're going to be taking some very powerful and expensive drugs to treat a serious disease. Why would you want to take a supplement that might reduce the effectiveness of the treatment? There will be plenty of time to take supplements after you have successfully completed treatment. During treatment you need to stick to the plan and stay away from them. My feeling on your pharmacist's position is that s/he looked at the manufacturers literature on adverse reactions secondary to medications. It doesn't discuss supplements in detail, so I'm going to assume they "think" it's okay. It's not!

I'll post some information later in this thread. We have discussed this many times here on the forum. You can find some of those discussions by entering "supplements" in our search function above.

I called my pharmacist n she asked me the brand of herbs n the name of the formula n she looked it up n said it was OK to take w Harvoni.  It has berberine in it n I saw someone say they stopped using there berberine while taking Harvoni.  So far I only took the herbs one day then I quit it.  But I am taking a advanced probiotic and GI health formula, it seems to only have probiotic in it.  I've been taking it for a few days now, I think that's OK to take.  Any opinions r advice.

Thanks, Kelly
