OK, here's a recipe I actually copied out when i found it on a website, I scribbled it on a piece of paper and stuck it into my cookbook (for later) - I always mean well, I have every good intention (in my mind) to try these things. Never seem to get back to the million bits of paper I have tucked into my cookbook. I must have a secret belief that as long as I "think" about creating some healthy thing, that just the thought of it might be good enough, and simply waaay less work? I need Linux's encouragement, or better yet, could somebody else make this, test it out, decide if it is good or horrible, and IF it IS SUPER delicious, then please mail one to me, and if I really like it could you mail me one every few days?

It's supposed to be one of some famous health guru guy's favourite health drinks, has natural anti-inflammatory/antioxidant properties.

Golden Milk Tea

2 cups coconut milk (or almond milk or soy milk)

1 tablespoon grated fresh raw peeled ginger

1 tablespoon grated fresh raw peeled tumeric

3 or 4 whole peppercorns

Simmer covered for 10 mins. Cool. Strain. Sweeten to taste. Store in fridge. Can be poured over crushed ice as an iced milk tea.

I thought it was time to fire up the blenders again! In honor of our buddy Dave, the unhinged one... Drone on! He would want you all to know, on those days you don't have it in you to cook and you need a boost, there's nothing more nutritious than a smoothie! This is how those with an aversion to certain foods can still get the nutrition necessary for improved health.

Thanks for the recipe Tig!

I like beets and any way to sweeten smoothies naturally is something I'm interested in.

Getting the added bonus of improved liver health is is great.

I'll be trying adding some beets to my smooties. smile

I've been hearing some good things on the inclusion of beets into our diets and particularly in smoothies. I see some products advertised on TV as well, but I'm thinking the following recipe is superior to anything seen on the tube. Anyone with a blender want to give this a try and get back to us?

Good Stuff Lisa!

Thanks for sharing the recipe ... I like easy ... and it sounds great when you need something quick before starting a daily activity.

I've actually never added Flax seeds, will need to read up on them and try 'em ... I have used Chia seeds, they help thicken a smoothie up and are quite nutritious.

Dave smile

I have a great breakfast smoothie, low in calories, great tasting, and done in a flash - cheap too!

One cup of almond milk

Half a banana

One teaspoon of peanut butter - non salted no added sugars

If you want to, you can add a teaspoon of flax seed and viola.

I use that for breakfast on the hop.

:D

Yes, I remember WELL how much you appreciated Linux's recipes, I was MORE than a little disappointed for you, when I heard, a few posts back, about the further delay on your teeth. Actually, you may be surprized how many of your historical details are forever emblazened in my memory banks, despite my fog. YOU are a real trooper, the real deal, I really admire your strength in so many ways, and in so many areas (that's a compliment like, just so's ya know!) Hmm, got carried away there, we were talking smoothies right? My partner went through a horrid period with his upper teeth, and finally, eventually, got every thing fixed up right again, altho he did not have to wait as long as you for his new upper denture. Regardless, be forewarned, it's good you are wonderfully well-practiced at getting the nutritious calories your body needs via this VERY GOOD method, as there will still likely be an adjustment period when your new teeth do come. He settled in to his, hard the first week or 2, then over a month it got better. Over the next couple months after that, they were starting to prove useful with less difficulties. Now he is getting along fine with them, he hates it tho that he has to cut his corn off the cob!! Small price to pay for the really ill person he used to be with the bone infections! I did break out the blender, for short periods, when he was going through the worst of it, but as he is a "picky" eater the requests were simple, just calories, he was little into "good" nutrition - ice cream milkshakes! - this rounded out whatever else I cooked up for him that was mostly nutritious but soft enough to gum down. He survived, despite the heavy-on-the-milkshakes diet. If I could, I would hire a health cook at my house!

I agree whole-heartedly about the absorption/usefulness of small particle released foods, "blurried" raw food, lyzed cellular availability, nuttin better!

Hey, did i just invent a new category?? - something between "blended" and a "slurry"? hee hee C.

I never did either until I got most of my teeth pulled and read this thread. I bought a big B&D Party Blender with 72oz container and have been making smoothies daily every since. The biggest advantage to me is that I get to eat healthy ingredients that taste good in a smoothie mixed with other ingredients as opposed to me not eating them because I don't like the taste of them served alone. smile It also does the chewing that I'm no longer able to do until I get my new teeth next month. biggrin

Try a couple of handfuls of

spinach, or arugula

fresh pineapple

fresh ginger.

Thin with ginger brew or almond coconut milk, or pineapple juice.

Sounds crazy, but it's yummy, and it's like you just ate a bucket full of salad.

No Tig56.  Don't add twinkies.

Well I'm proud of ya for even making them for someone else.

I mainly use bananas to sweeten a smoothie but you can just as easily use strawberries or other sweet fruit or even some honey.

Just a thought ... smile

Blending breaks greens down to a cellular level (better than chewing for that). It's one of the best ways to get the very most from a fruit or vegetable IMO.

I don't always like them, sometimes I prefer a salad or cooked veggie but when I want the most from them I go the blender route.

Enjoy (even if it is DQ .. LOL)

(I just don't like the crash of too much refined sugar and especially high fructose etc it certainly is addicting as is salt ... that's why big business puts so much in stuff, it's a cheap way to addict people to their foods). But you knew that already ... I'm just reminding those that read this.

Well Linux,

You may be pleased to know I ACTUALLY TRIED to make a smoothie!! I DID make a smoothie!

I confess, I did have a DQ thing, it was SO full of chocolate chunks I felt quite sick after. But GUILT had nothing to do with me trying to go smoothie-ing.

My friend (palliative care) - too long a story - wanted one - princess and the pea kinda thing - her people (well intended) kept adding "healthful" and/or "curative" items to the smoothie she was willing to have (many combined ingredients - everything from hemp hearts, coconut butter, raw burdock leaves, barrages of "special" oils, leaves and many other strange "additives", which tasted to her bitter or soapy, etc. Not what she asked for! Things THEY could not resist adding, things THEY thought she should have - but once presented she would pass on them - (she was into a personal phase of believing "a raw fruit ONLY diet" is going to cure me)  ... after her going 3 days without the smoothie she wanted, and rejecting the ones that had been brought to her .... I asked her EXACTLY what items she wanted in it, and made it according to her express wishes - bleech!!

2 whole peeled frozen bananas, about 1 1/2 cups of fresh frozen mullberries, thinned out with nothing but natural creek water!! Shudder! She loved it, it was just what she wanted, and nothing else. And couldn't be easier to make, so was good for no-talent-in-the-kitchen me to assemble.

I can see now why one would be tempted to add SOMETHING to it!

Tasted it, yuck!, I have never liked bananas, they are a total waste on me, even spat them out as a baby I am told, still avoid them at all costs, they can ruin a perfectly good fruit salad (if a  person is not "into" them). I know, I know, they ARE such a great food, just too bad, it's just a kid thing I guess. Like Tig and his cukes.

I have not been smoothie-ing for myself, I buy many dif. kinds or fruit/veg juices/fruit nectors/coconut waters and pour a little of each into a giant tumbler until I have about 5 dif fluids in there and swill that down. Eat the rest of my fruit, raw/whole, cut up fruit salad mostly. Just never seemed to get into machine blending, don't know why.

I will warn you now. I have 2 coupons to DQ, and I have a trip out of town coming up soon - so you know what is going to happen next ... don't you. smile C.

But Dave, they said that they're using the best potatoes and are frying them in some really improved beef flavored oil. According to this really informative website "Treehugger", they are only made with 14 ingredients. That makes them healthy, right? Might throw a few in the next smoothie, with a cuke of course to balance things out. Yum.....  (Hurl) biggrin

Yours in health,  your buddy, Tig wink

Hya Canuck,

I think perhaps Canadian mail carriers handle the mail a tad better than US mail carriers ...

here it's a prerequisite for carriers to always put boxes labeled Fragile and This Side Up at the bottom of all stacks and upside down ...

then throw said package at least 10 meters into the back of the truck ...

then pile everything on top of it ...

then drop said package in the mud ...

then run over said package ...

then scrape up what's left and place in plastic bag with peanuts ...

leave package on ground in rain (right behind tire of deliveree's car ...

Are you still sure you want me to send you a smoothie in the mail?

Dave smile

I just love cukes ... but you can put any ol' thing you desire in there ... two bananas and you'll never taste the cukes but if you don't like them just put something else in (carrots are good, celery great)

One thing I always notice when I drink these, my skin always feels great and clears right up from most anything bothering me.

So I think they do a pretty good job at taking toxins out of the system (and now matter how good we try to eat, we always are either eating or breathing some kinds of toxins).

Cukes are not an essential ingredient at all.

Leafy Greens are, (I think they are the real workhorses as far as toxins go) but most any fruits and/ or vegies are good.

Smoothies are just a very efficient way to get the most from those fruits and vegies (much more efficient than steaming even) ... blend breaks 'em down to molecular level but retains everything. Blend to very smooth consistency is best.

Can you taste the cucumber? I have an extreme dislike for that taste. It's worse than green pepper.... Other options to the cukes?

Riba really drove my sweet tooth ... toward the end of Tx I was NOT eating well.

... now that I'm weaning my self off of the Riba (there's like tons of the yuck still oozing through my veins) ...

... goin' for the deep cleanse ... no more mass quantities of the sweets, if I can help it.

I'll never swear off Ice cream or Oreos ... (No friggin' WAY!!) but really trying to purge this Shinola out of my system right now (and yes, I do know the difference between Shinola and that other stuff smile )

Todays Smoothie:

The High Output - Nutritional  Smoothie

1/2 Cup Steel Cut Oats (not Instant)

1-1/2 Cup Almond Milk

1 Cup Orange Juice (or better yet One Orange sectioned and peeled)

2 Cups Kale (washed with stems removed)

3/4 Cups Cilantro (cut off the bulk of stems)

1 Banana

1 Tbs Chia Seeds

2-3 Stalks Celery (washed with ends cut off)

4 Carrots (washed with ends cut off)

Place in blender in the order above, powder oatmeal before adding other ingredients, add in stages with vegies cut to ~1-1/2" lengths, blend until creamy smooth, add water or more almond milk if needed.

Note: You might want to reduce the quantities if you're not going to drink the batch in one day. If you let this smoothie sit in the fridge for too long it will thicken up a lot. The oats and chia seeds will make it tend to gel. (If gelled too much, just add some water and re-blend)

This one should give you quite a bit of energy, I'd save making this one for a time that you feel like you need a recharge ... It should do the trick.

Enjoy,

Dave

That's my favorite, I will be substituting a whole Orange, cut to wedges, de-seeded and peeled next time though. That info on the Orange Juice, Not From Concentrate is a bit disturbing but not too surprising ... always best to go with the actual fruit whenever possible.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave, I just made the smoothie recipe with the orange, Almond milk, oats, banana, Cucumber, avocado, etc.

I screwed up and bought vanilla almond milk  and I substituted the cranberry juice with fresh cherries (Which are a pain to seed).  It is pretty darn good.  Thanks for the recipe.  I feel healthier just drinking it.

LOL, I thought you were talkin about oranges ... I don't think the method I said would work for cherries, lol

I'm sure there's an easy way to pit cherries too, google?

Why ... cut in half, cut each half in 3 wedges, pop the seeds out of each wedge, cut peel off and toss in blender.

Easy Peasy

Use a sharp knife.

Takes a little practice but gets really easy once you do it to a bunch of them

They'd be frozen or you can get them de-hydrated, I'll see if I can find examples online.

Here's one your grocery may have or you can order online. I like Red Mill products but they are a little expensive. Larger quantities are a bit less. I'm sure there are other brands as well.

Here's another brand, haven't read the labels on these but they should be just dried cranberries.

You can put a little liquid of some kind in the blender, toss in a hand full of these, blend then add other ingredients.

Indeed, Groupergetter ... you can just peel, de-seed and throw that citrus in the blender along with a banana, perhaps or manjo to sweeten and voila ... very refreshing and healthy taste treat.

Yup, glad to see so many about to get Tx, on Tx or those who've actually achieved SVR and are now living HCV-Free!!! YaHoo!!!

Please feel free to add any recipes you like.

Dave

Scott, I'd just add a large orange peeled and de-seeded in place of one cup ... probably very close and it's not an exact science by any means.
