Hi Malcolm, thanks for your advice. Will follow the progress and ask if anything unclear. Here they use under under 21 for bilirubine. Max 50 on both ASAT and ALAT and max 66 on GGT, which is  bit more lenient than elsewhere, is not it?.

Thanks again and cheers!

Hi Bouba, Your elevated bilirubin is almost certainly related to RBC haemolysis, caused by Riba. As you are early in Rx, this should settle down. I wouldn't worry about it for now, but post your next results. Could you also post the normal range for your lab. Here we use 4-20 umol/L. Cheers.

Pulled my 1st week labs today. Already knew about platelets, rbc, wbc, etc. But what caught my eye was elevated bilirubin, which went up to 35 from pre-treatment 12.

I have read the earlier posts on it but did not find an answer. Any clue? Advice?

Hi CC, a raised bilrubin is par for the course. It is due to the destruction of blood cells, not all tx or Hcv related. It is a natural product of cell replacement and the way the body flushes the debris away. Two reasons to monitor are, it is used in conjunction with blood cell counts to monitor replacement of said cells. Liver function, as the liver is the main processor and provider of the factors and proteins needed to replace a cell. It is monitored as it is a cheap quick method of checking the function and as an indicator. A poorly built cell will in some cases collapse or swell and burst, if this occurs on an increasing level it will show in the amount of bilrubin. This is what my haematologist told me years ago and I must admit I never really checked up that diligently. Bleeders always have high bilrubin counts. CG

CC waiting for labs was difficult for me toooooooo I got frustrated with my doc and requested the lab give me a copy of all results its a small hospital where I live, when my labs were sent to my big doc in the big city they would sometimes fall into a black hole and I waited even longer till I got smart and picked up my results of course I had to find someone to help me read them. I tracked them in a chart and was able to view my own changes this was helpful when asking questions. funny thing was when I was deep into my treatment I took my current labs to any doc I went to, some of them were amazed at how screwy they were. some amazed I was still standing. it freaked out my chiropractor.. lol but as stated here poor labs all part of it but do keep an eye on it. good luck and your test hope it comes back soon.

Could be due to the fact that ribaviron is destroying your red cells, it's a by product of that.

been a long time since I looked at a lab slip so I don't recall norms but I wouldn't be alarmed. It's just part of the process to have crappy labs.

Hi CC,

I am not sure what raised Bilirubin might mean either but agree with MYS that the reduced Ast/Alt's looks good. smile

To put your mind at rest maybe you could call your nurse and see if she can look into your results and get back to you re. the bilirubin levels?  Good luck with your results!!

Love and hugs

Thanks MYS,

I did have my 4 week PCR today. On Monday I take the 5th shot. I'll hopefully have the result of the 4 week PCR when I see my specialist in two weeks. (It will be two loong weeks :) )

I was pleased with the drop in ALT AST of course, ALT had dropped most, but I also noticed that my nurse was not entirely happy about my labs. She made a remark that I don't remember now, but it was something like "she didn't feel sure about this". At the time I didn't ask any intelligent questions about that I'm afraid.

Hi, I don't know what bilirubin measures, but I think the ALT and AST going down is a good sign.
Are you going to have a 4-week PCR? I strongly recommend it. Have it on the day you're supposed to take your 5th shot, but before you actually do the 5th shot.
All the best,
MYS

Hi,

I got the labs for the first two weeks today. I noticed that bilirubin has been rising. Pre tx 10, after first shot 23, after second shot 31. Does anyone know if this is normal? And what does this indicate?

ALT and AST had gone down.

CC
