It occurs to me that I never measured how much water I was drinking during treatment. But for the first twelve weeks, the Incivek time, I carried my blue Pegasys medicine bag everywhere I went. There was always a dose of Incivek, 20g. of fat in snack form, and a bottle of Deer Park. I sipped constantly, all day, at work, at home, in the car, everywhere. The thing is, that habit persists today (minus the Pegasys bag), two weeks post tx. I guess it works out to about eight bottles a day, or about a gallon of water during the 24-hour day. I am sure this varies greatly from patient to patient for all sorts of reasons. The thing to remember is water will definitely reduce your side effects, so keep it handy and drink it whenever you can. Alan

I threw in some G2 to mix it up a little.  You'll get used to getting up to visiting the "library" every night.  Good luck.

The sad part is...I already visit the 'library' several times during the night (after giving birth to twins my bladder was never the same).  So I guess will should learn to sleep sitting on the the 'throne' :)

When I first started treatment my NP said that I should drink a minimum of 3 liters(about 3 quarts); since then I had gotten used to that amount and even increased it by 1 to 2 more quarts.

The basic idea is that the dryness side affects(skin, nasal, eyes etc) can be remedied better internally, rather than attempting only exterior remedies.

Thanks!  My husband thinks a gallon is too much.  I guess I will just try different amounts and if the meds make me feel very 'dry' then I will probably be drinking without even thinking about it.

And this forum is great!  It helps so much to talk to people who understand what I am about to go through.  I am so greatful you guys are here!

Daily fluid requirement depends on weight, diet, climate, level of activity etc. I have a daily fluid intake of 2-2.5 litres/day, but it is winter here, and I am not exercising. It is important to realize the dry eyes, mouth and skin are not due to dehydration, but to the direct action of the drugs on the lacrimal, salivary and sweat /sebaceous glands. I was told to drink enough water to ensure a normal urine output, with a normal concentration of urine. I found that if I drank a gallon of fluid a day I felt nauseated and bloated. Experiment and you will find what amount of fluid you are comfortable with.

Hey DJ, I am in week 13! Don't worry u will adjust to drinking water because meds dehydrate you so it's easy to remember for me! I never leave the house without water or Gatorade. I find Gatorade helps when water starts tasting bad. Gatorade will also keep your electrolytes up.
In beginning I marked plastic gallon jug on how much I was suppose to drink! After week or so u will be drinking water. If u start coughing a lot say after few weeks increase liquids.
I stay thirsty w dry mouth and I drink constantly!
We are here to help u thru those first few weeks. U r not alone.
We understand and here to help

Starting treatment next month.  Am thinking of taking up drinking water to try to get used to it before I start.

How much water do you have to drink a day during treatment?  Is a gallon about right?  I thought I could get a gallon jug and just fill it up each day and know that when I finished it was had enough.

But I wasn't sure how much is usually consumed during treatment.

Thanks

A gallon should be enough, it kinda depends on your weight. My GI told me to drink 1oz per 2 pounds of body weight per day. But you really can't drink too much. Treatment is very harsh on the body and drinking a lot can make it easier. I drink over 2 gallons a day and it still dosen't seem to be enough sometimes. Good Luck, and may God watch over you.
