Great, glad you got your medal, Ranelle, you will treasure it!  smile

I agree, we are all capable of achieving more than we realise by sheer determination, positive thinking and willpower.  Being young and fit, and experiencing very few sx from your tx must have been a huge advantage to you, not many people would be able to cope with that sort of physical challenge while on tx, it would be out of the question for most of us!

Take it easy for a few days now to recover...and thanks for sharing your inspirational story with us!

I kept physical activity low on tx. I worked in a big building with a lot of stairs. That's all I could handle.

I walked thru treatment unless hgb was low. I have done a few 5K's in the last year since I hit SVR. I have another one coming up on Aug 2. My transplant doc watches me close because of portal hypertension. I've had bleedouts. Other than that, I think the work out is good for us.

If you do not have to take a beta blocker for PH, then I think you could go for it with your docs blessing. Is your hgb stable? That will cause shortness of breath. The mental part of a work out can give great benefits too.

I have a friend who is a cyclist and did the 48 weeks. He had to slow it down when anemia hit, but kept pretty steady with a workout otherwise.

I lurk and read here weekly and look forward to following your progess!

xo, Karen:)

I am just finishing double therapy and have managed to basically maintain my normal active lifestyle. Including a plethora of outdoor activities. A few words of advice, SUNSCREEN, H20 and electrolytes! Kayaking for just a few hours in May I got a severe sunburn especially on the tops of my ears. Not fun. I'm usually not sun sensitive. I say it's always better to try and not succeed than to not try at all.

I am excited to hear your feeling well enough to consider doing this Spartan!

Thanks for letting me know! I'm really noticing the changes and as I mentioned before, it seemed like I was experiencing some very different reactions to this stuff. Believe me it helps to hear these kinds of things, especially when you've been there and done that. I keep reading more about some of the studies and people almost breezing through treatment and that can cause some confusion in my brain fogged mind! It helps to remember that in many cases we're very different symptomatically. Your shared wisdom is beyond valuable!

Tig56... You are on a different triple therapy then I am on as well. I was a very active person before starting treatment and I have seen a decline in my activity level. As my friends say, Im now in normal human mode and not in overdrive, and Im only starting into my 6th week so only time will tell how long I can stay this active. I want to live as active as possible now, guess it makes me feel in control. Treatment effects everyone differently. Hang in there and stay strong!

Good luck on your race.

@Tig56, no it's not affecting you differently, it just means the drugs are kicking some Hepc ass. They kicked my ass too. Hang in there your doing all you need to do.

Good luck on the race! I don't know how you can do it though. I'm beginning to think this stuff is affecting me differently than many. My strength after 7 weeks is gone. I continue to walk daily, stay hydrated, eat appropriately but the strength is just disappearing at an alarming rate. I go in for labs next week, so hopefully that will tell me why.

ranelle,

i'd definitely do the trial run. also i highly recommend keeping your potassium levels up!

when i was still running, it once took me 2.5 days to recover from 3miles in 90 degree heat. i actually had to drink some salty water

and taught for 2 days with wet bandannas on my head.....

my round of soc 10 years ago i kept up my 12 miles/week for the ist 2 months, but it was 70 degrees out. 10 years later and 2nd round i find i get dehydrated with a 15/20 minute workout. whatever you decide good luck.

Thank you everyone for the encouragement! I will talk to my Dr in two weeks about it and see what he says. The nice thing about the race is Im only racing against myself and can take as much time as I need and if I cant do the obstacle..then I dont do it. My husband is also doing it with me, so I feel safe in that respect as well. I will let you all know what my Dr says!

Hey Ranelle

Would do a trial run of a predetermined length similar to what the race would be like then notice how you feel for two days afterward too gage your bodies recovery ability.

There will be many more of these races in the comings years, but you will not be doing triple therapy ever again so it should take priority.

Just a contrasting thought

Matt

The fact that you're even considering doing a 5 mile Spartan obstacle race tells me that you listen to your body, and that doing this is within reach. Have fun, drink lotsa water.

It would be great if you could do it, Ranelle, and it would give you such a boost.  You`re coping with tx very well and you`re obviously fit and strong, but you also need to listen to your body, and so maybe it would be a sensible precaution to allow for an earlier stopping point, just in case you need it.  Some of our members have managed to keep up quite rigorous exercise and sports regimes while on triple therapy.  You might need to plan for some extra rest and recovery time afterwards.

Just walking to the kitchen and back was a marathon for me some days while I was on tx!  aww

Best of luck if you do go for it...let us know what you decide!

Hi Ranelle,

If you think you can do it, go for it. I don't know what your Hb is but it's obviously OK for you to consider it. It's great to be able to live a fairly normal life while on triple Rx. I certainly couldn't! It won't do you any harm but you may be more exhausted than you realise. Good luck- I'm envious.

Hello all-

I was hoping that you guys could give me your thoughts and advice about doing a 5 mile Spartan obstacle race while on triple therapy. As of today I have finished 4 weeks of triple therapy and I have been feeling fine. I go in for my 4 week labs on Monday and see my Dr a week later. I was going to talk with him at that time about his thoughts as well. I have not been having any real side effects so far and I feel fine, and this is why Im having mixed feelings about doing the race. I feel like I can do it (I did it last year, so I know what to expect), but afraid that it might wear me out too much.......Thoughts? Advice?

Thanks in advance!
