RE: AST and ALT levels during treatment

Thanks everyone... I know I should tell joes dr.  but with his anger I am afraid to say anything.  Everytime I would mention to joe he should talk to his dr. about his behavior, he would say NO!  He was worried they might lower his dosage and then the treatment wouldnt work if lowered.  The dr. warned us of depression as a side effect, but never mentioned the anger.  I tried to walk on egg shells around joe knowing it was just the treatment.  But for whatever reasons, it wasnt enough....  I feel so drained, and emotional from the entire experience.  It pains me that it has to effect our son in such a way...

Thanks again for the support....

Hi Joe`s wife, I`m really sorry to hear about this, my heart goes out to you.   As the others have said, the treatment drugs often cause rage and irritation, and some people do experience quite severe personality changes.  This can put a huge strain on family life and on normal social interactions of course, and can lead to people acting totally out of character on occasions.  I can`t begin to imagine how difficult it must be for spouses and partners who are doing their best to be supportive and tolerant, and you must be exhausted with the strain of it.  Even though you know it`s the side effects that are causing Joe to act like this, it doesn`t make the situation any easier for you to cope with.

I really hope you`ve heard from him by now, or will do very soon at least. Thanks for letting us know what`s happening, and please do keep us updated.

Sending all best wishes to you, take care.

I'm sorry to hear you've had this happen. The rage and anxiety are very common results of this Tx and will likely return to normal after Tx is finished and the medication clears the system. Keep your positive attitude, you looked forward to this chance, hopefully Joe will adjust to this change and will realize what has happened. Have you mentioned this to his doctor? It might be worth discussing at the earliest opportunity. Good luck and keep in touch. I'll keep my fingers crossed for all of you!

Hi Joe's wife,

I'm sorry to hear that. Anger and intolerance is a side effect of treatment, and it affects some more than others. I hope you can find him and bring him home. It's a really tough ride for partners and I am sorry you have had to put up with this. Did he take his meds?  Hopefully he will come to his senses. Best wishes.

This is Joes wife.  Wanted to let you all know that joes entire personality changed during just 4 months of treatment.  He became angry and mean and had zero tollerance for even his son.  Joe was always a nice and quiet and gentle.  He randomly packed up and left us yesterday.  I hope he didnt relapse.

So sad...we had waited so long for the chance for treatment.

Hi Joe,

Sorry, I've been away. What are your AST and ALT levels now? Mine dropped from x3 normal to x2 normal while on Rx. Fluctuations of 5-15 are not important. The ALT is the one to watch. It should not go over 100 while on Rx. Cheers.

My AST and ALT levels went up near the end of treatment. But guess it was nothing - they went back down after treatment, and have stayed low. My NP also said fluctuation during treatment was normal.

Hi Joe, my levels went up while I was on the Incivik. Now that I'm off of it they are in the normal range again. My NP said it was normal. I'm sure Mallani will have more info. Kellie

Hi..

Ive been on hep c treatment with Victrilous for 12 weeks now, and have been undetected since week 4.I also have cirrhosis and portal hypertension with slightly swollen spleen...The first 9 weeks my AST and ALT levels cosistently went down and my ALT even fell into normal range. My AST is slightly out of normal range.

These last 3 weeks have me somewhat concerned as my AST and ALT went up the last 3 times in a row.. Not much but they have went up 5 to 15 points each week.

What do you make of this? Im hoping Malini might chime in..

       Thanks in advance all!

                   Joe

Hi Joe, it`s not unusual for liver enzyme levels to fluctuate during treatment, your liver is having to process some very strong meds, and 5 to 15 points isn`t a huge increase.  I expect Mallani will also comment when he`s next around.  You`re doing well being UND from week 4, so I wouldn`t worry too much about it.

Just keep going, and keep us updated! smile
