Question on riba rash

If you're experiencing problems with drowsiness from Benadryl, my specialty pharmacy included samples of Certrizine ( generic Zyrtec), no drowsiness at all. My doctor approved and it worked very well to control the itching. I also used Calamine and Caladryl lotions with good success.

Thanks everyone for the assistance. It sounds like I have the typical ribavarin rash. It certainly is reminiscent of heat rash. I just wanted to make sure what I had was normal and nothing to concern myself with. I never had it during my prior round of tx.

Hi Angela,

The Riba rash is usually confined to the shoulders, chest, trunk and thighs.  It is particularly prominent around the waistline. It looks a bit like 'prickly heat' being a fine red maculo-papular rash (that's small red, often raised bumps). Scratching or rubbing gives histamine release, giving a red, blotchy appearance. Unlike the Incivek rash, it doesn't produce vesicles ( blisters) . Mine came and went, and disappeared after two or three applications of a low-dose steroid ointment.  Avoid tight clothes, hot showers and skin moisturizers, and above all don't scratch. Cheers.

I had the rash last summer during my riba/peg treatment. It was mainly at my injection sites but my elbows also got those weird white itchy bumps, and my whole body was very dry. I feel like it was exposure to the summer heat and/or sun. I took benedyl (which made me sleepy) and used Curél intensive healing cream (fragrance-free) and that always gave me relief. Now im on sovaldi/riba and i dont have any of that anymore, probably because i dont do the injections anymore and its freezing cold outside. I do get very dry still though so i still use that cream. But who knows, im only on week 5...that might change. Anyhow, hope that helps! GOOD LUCK :)

Scruffy ...if you were undetected at week 4, why are you doing 48 weeks of treatment? I take my incevik twice a day. But will be nice to sleep in on the weekend, especially Sunday, the day after shot day, as I take it at 7.30 am and 7.30 pm. I was hoping my counts would go up, and I'd not feel so tired. But I guess I'll still have that with the other two. No need to wait to the last ten weeks, treatment is getting old after the first ten...lol. But, if it works, will be OK.

@Gracie

Ya, I felt a lot better after the incivek. Biggest thing was not having to do the 20gm of fat three times a day. Ending the incivek is a BIG step. The next "up hill" will be your last 12-10 weeks. It gets pretty old by then. I'm on week 38 and I'm really tired of being on treatment. I've been anemic since week 7  but I'm also REALLY glad I did it. I was still undetectable at 34 weeks. Still on full dose of riba.  Congratz on three weeks of incivek left. Good job!!

best to you.

angie,

that's spot on for the rash. i believe it was day 3 for me & my pharmiscist, not dr. told me it was the rash. don't scratch & start now on benadryl if you're prone to rashes. unfortunately i scratched & wound up w/ full body irritation for several months.

the great news is this rash means the meds are working & will most likely be und by day 14!!!!!!

also bless yourself  w/ the cold weather here on the east. i dealt w/ it during 90 degree heat.

be well, get the cortizone cream and zyrtec as well.

Scruffy.. Did you feel a lot better when you were done the incevik? I'm hoping for that, as I've only got less than 3 weeks left of it now.

Hi angie

That sounds about right. I'm om week 38 of the incivek, riba and pegasys treatment. The rash comes and goes. It looks like little pin dots on my lower legs. Now it looks like scaley skin there. It itches now and again. When I first started treatment I had a rash that looked like hives that started on my waist band and went all over my torso but was gone after 2-3 weeks. I was lucky that I never got the incivek rash. Best way to make it go away. DON'T SCRATCH.

Best wishes

I had the itchy Riba rash on my chest, back and arms.  For a while my skin felt like alligator skin and the many lotions I tried didn't help much.  Towards the end of the rash I felt like the toxins were coming out my pores so I took baking soda baths and I thought it seemed to help me feel better.  I had back scratchers in every room of my house, car and work....lol.

All my side effects changed, so I think I only had the rash about a month and then it moved on to other things.

I have the RIBA rash in my chest and neck, not too bad. Feels like a bunch of little bumps. It gets itchy in waves, then settles down. Very hard if not impossible to not scratch, although thays what everybody says not to do...lol. If its bad at night, I take a Benedryl. Just an annoyance really.

What does the rash look like? I have some type of rash on my arms and lower legs it seems..little pin dots. I just want to make sure that it's normal. It's not really itchy, though I do feel itchy in general. I have been keeping an eye on it and it hasn't gotten any worse throughout the day. On day 5 of tx.
