Hi Lee,

Good old Ribavirin has been at work. It accumulates in red blood cells, causing haemolysis. This causes the bone marrow to pump out more red cells. Some of these are immature, and enlarged (macrocytes). The mixture in sizes is called anisocytosis. Teardrop red cells just have a pointed end and may be found in many of the anaemias. Acanthocytes have blunt projections from the surface and look weird. They can be found in many anaemias, and are common in chronic liver disease. Your Hb is OK at 9.5, and the platelets are low, as expected in cirrhosis.

With the transfusions and Procrit, your bone marrow must be going nuts. Carry on, buddy.
