mallani, I bottomed out on 1200 mg a day last time. so hepa said 600 this time.. I am glad about that. I am getting some little rash areas on legs but trying to doctor them as fast as possible. I jump in cold shower bout 2 times a day ( just water) to relieve skin. I will so glad when this is over. I keep a headache too. sick of Tylenols too.. just a bad day.. i'll get thru it.  thanks

Hi TazKat,

Are you really only taking 600 mg of Riba a day? That's a low dose, as normal males need 1,200 mg a day.

It's unusual just to get the Riba rash on the face. The trunk, chest and upper arms and legs is most common. I would get it checked out to make sure it's not something else.

For Riba rash, limit showers and only use lukewarm water. Baby shampoo in tiny amounts, no soap, no alcohol containing creams, avoid the sun, wear loose clothes and use a low strength hydrocortisone ointment, like 0.5% triamcinolone. Cheers.

I have that on my wrist and arms. My Dr said if is doesn't go away soon he will reduce my riba dose. I'm a pretty big guy so I am taking 1400 mg/day.

TazKat:  Don't hesitate to call your doctor if it continues burning and/or isn't improving.  That is what they are there for!  We have to be careful with treating ourselves as we can exacerbate the problems without intending to.

Angie,

I use cold towels as compresses and then spray a hydrocortisone spray from Walgreens (Cooling itch Relief Spray).   Benadryl also helps a bit.

cheers, lee

Yes..the riba rash. I have it on my forearms and lower legs and sometimes even get spots on my nose..very itchy like mosquito bites. Heat makes it worse. It's very annoying. I haven't found much that helps.

I got the riba rash way back when I started treatment for about three weeks. I found the sun and sweat made it worse. After that went away I got a slight rash from the incivek on my lower legs. Most important thing is NOT scratching.

Hey Taz,

I got the riba rash on my face as well. Prior to tx, even as a teenager I was lucky to not really have skin issues on my face but the riba has surely done a number on my skin. I haven't even considered the dermatologist as I know the cause, I figured I'd wait until after treatment and see if it fixes itself. I personally wouldn't use too much of the corisone lotions on your face as it may make you break out more. I at first tried to wash my face more thinking it would help, but it did the exact opposite. One day in the shower I decided to wash my face with my shampoo instead of soap and strangely enough, my face looked/felt so much better; since then I only wash my face with the shampoo in the shower, and of course no make up or anything. Not all shampoos would be good to use on your face of course, I use Garnier Fructis Pure Clean Shampoo (clear green bottle/white top).

I also got the rash on my ankles, the palms of my hands (my palms have also gotten real dry and callus like), and unfortunately, perhaps the most annoying, the cleavage area!! LOL ... that makes things rather uncomfortable as you can probably imagine. I was able to control (to a manageable level) the rash (everywhere but my face) by the occasional Benedryl if it was real bad and the use of a cortisone cream.

Good luck and like Tig said, don't scratch! (i have and its no good)

Hi Taz:  That is kinda weird that you got the rash just on your face.  My face, and my feet, were the only places I didn't get the rash (but that was on Incivek too).  Actually, my hands also didn't get the rash but my fingers got blisters instead.  Ahh...the memories.

I found that OTC topical cortisone creams worked as well as the prescription ones.  I also took many oatmeal baths.  You could probably create an oatmeal paste and apply it to your facial rash.

It is possible that this particular rash isn't related to the meds but who knows?  It is good that it is just a small patch and hopefully that is the worst of it.

Hi Taz,

What you're describing matches what we fondly call the Riba rash. Sometimes shows up in small or large patches. Often your face, arms and abdomen. I guess it can show up just about anywhere but that's where it got me. My abdomen mostly. It can be something that comes and goes the entire time you're taking it. The single worst thing you can do is scratch it! It will get much worse if you do. There are a few things you can do. I took an over the counter medicine called Xyrtec (Certrizine) or Benadryl. Xyrtec won't make you drowsy, Benadryl will, but it can also help you sleep at night. Check with your doctor first, but most will allow that. You can also use a topical cream or lotion, oatmeal based or even calamine lotion will help. Just don't scratch and don't expose them to sunlight either.

Tig
