Hi Perry,

So good to hear from you old friend! I'm glad you got the Happy Birthday message too. Sorry your son (& yourself) had to go through such a health scare. I'm glad he's doing better and hope that's behind you both.

Your ability to keep moving forward has always amazed me, as well as the rest of the gang here. You run more each week than I have ran in 15 years! I'm not sure but I think our mate, Perry is part machine, lol! He continued to run marathons while in the throws of a lengthy Interferon and Ribavirin treatment regimen that began two years ago. I believe he has some sort of top secret fuel cell powering his legs and feet! Your secret is safe with us Perry.

Please keep in touch. We've got some incredible people here now, many still check in routinely from both of our treatment time frames. The newest protocols are so different and effective now. Take a minute when you have time to look at the latest information. Our Warriors are really slaying their Dragon's with merciless abandon! There has been some fabulous advances. Check it out!

Hi all. Yes its been a while and just popped in and saw a birthday wish from Tig from a couple of days ago. Another year and must be about 18 months since finishing tx - 62 now and still enjoying life. the last few months have been a bit trying with a lot of life events happening around me but am now coming up for breath - health and running have enabled me to get through it all so onwards and upwards again - 1 foot in front of the other. Still averaging over 100 miles a week and not to far off 5000 miles running for the year. Was really hoping to be back in the states this year but with everything it will be definitely next year with a lot of running. Am continuing with marathons at present with the odd 80 - 100 miler thrown in so a lot of fun being had. Still planning length of NZ run and a biggie in the states for next year. One of the life events was my 23 year old being in and out of hospital with a nasty reaction to prescribed meds which regressed him a long way for about 2 months ( neuroleptic maligmant syndrome) but he has come out of it now - it was long sleepness nights for a while. Anyway that's enough rambling from me. Hope all are well - or as well as can be -I think of you all often. Take care and keep smiling.

I hope so ari-anna. Christchurch is my old home town and my dear old mum still lives in Centaurus rd - not far from where the old skating rink was. Need to dothe Chch marathon sometime so who knows. Take care and I'm sure w will catch up at some stage

Hmmm Perry, all North Island marathons you are planning - I'm from the Mainland, it's the Christchurch Marathon on 5 June.

Those are some very beautiful places you are running in - all going well I am hoping to do some more interesting/scenic events in the future. It's possible I may make a Nth Is one as I have a friend in Wellington who walks in half marathons.

Maybe one day we will both be at the same event!

Hi Perry,

inspiring story, esp all your running during treatment. I'm currently training to walk my first half marathon 5 June. Basically had to put dreams on hold during treatment - however I am up and about now with two 10k walks under my belt and a 14k walk coming up 20 March.

It's really helpful for me to hear about other people out there keeping fit.

Hey Perry,

It's great to hear from you old friend!! I see you're still putting one foot in front of the other and I still marvel at how you were able to do it all the way through treatment. It's just an incredible story. Everyone here needs to read some of Perry's accomplishments during treatment. It just amazed us all and continues to bring utter respect for his determination. He was and always will be an inspiration. I'm going to place a link to one of his threads that was most active during his treatment, hope you don't mind Perry, but you're kind of a folk hero around here!

I have little doubt that you will continue on to achieve everything you set out to do. Telling you to take it easy during treatment didn't seem to slow you down much. Perhaps you ran a few half marathons instead of full ones. All I can say is wow.... Good luck to you and your son!

Hello Perry,

You are truly amazing! As Gracie said an inspiration to all of us!

A wonderful example that life beyond SVR can be whatever we care to make it.

For me a 20 mile bike ride is a huge ordeal.

I'll think of ya on my next walk and try to convince myself to go that extra mile ... (I can't even fathom 100 miles ... LOL).

No need to tell you to keep up the great work ... you're leading the pack ... 

I enjoy hearing of your exploits please keep us tuned in on how they go ... we'll never tire of hearing of such heart warming successes. smile

Perry... You are one amazing man! I ran 6km yesterday, training for a 10k. Lol. That would be just a little warm up for you. What an inspiration you are to us all!

Hi all. Thought it was high time I called in to say hi and let you know life carries on being good. Running ( of course!!!) is still a big part of my life and continue to do 120 + mile weeks - have recently done a 100 miler around our wonderful Lake Taupo which took a bit longer than expected but still managed in 21 and a half hours. Have a 47 km run in 2 weeks, then a few marathons with a 24 hour later in the year. My big USA run looks as though it may be next year now due to circumstances - my high needs boy ( soon to be 23 ) who has a partial trisomy 13 hopefully will be in longterm care which will be great for him by the end of the year . However I am hoping to get to Phoenix at the end of the year for a 6 day race where I would be planning on reaching 500 + miles in the allotted time. Sorry to bore you all with the running exploits. Hope all are as well as you can be and getting on and enjoying life. Take care all.

Good to hear from you Perry! Sounds to me like you have continued to excel and the SVR news never grows old. Having amassed a 6200 mile total is a staggering number. How you were able to do that while suffering through an Interferon and Riba regimen is beyond me. I'm still expecting to see you pop out of a phone booth with a big S on your chest!

Hi all - hope all are as well as can be expected and battling through the day to day issues of treatment or getting back on with life. I will consider this year a good year as I reached SVR 12 - the 24 weeks through treatment was a battle but as II do with running long distances I went into it expecting anything and everuthing so wasn't surprised as well as being determined to get on with what running I could and this certainly helped - I just looked at my log of miles completed this year and currently stand at 6200 miles so happy with that. Have also been battling with getting my teeth sorted - they were finaly killed after the treatment - and now have top plate in with the bottom few left being pulled in January and bottom plate being put in. This should make a huge difference to health. Apart from that am feeling really great and loving life. Still got the goal of the big run next year and will really increase mileage early in the year. Anyway take as much care of yourselves as possible during the season and may 2016 bring all that you wish.

Thanks for sharing your great news! I always enjoy seeing your name on the list of new messages. You continue to be an inspiration to us all. I'm looking forward to your run across the country next year. How about I run from the Atlantic to the Pacific with you? Yeah, I think Atlantic Ave. meets Pacific St. about one kilometer from the start line. I could probably make it that far, ha, ha! Seriously, you can count on all of us following your progress across the country. I would love the opportunity to meet you along the way. Maybe we can make that work. It would be an honor to see you.

The lab values are excellent, but I expect nothing but good news from you. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other. It has worked well for you the entire time I've known you. No reason to change that winning routine now! Good luck my friend...

Hi all - a quick update - just been and seen specialist as a followup from last bloodtests - all back in range - ALT - 17, AST - 26, Ferritin - 225 ( went from 704 to 1057) so all good. Our hospital is getting a fibroscan in the next couple of months so will be sent in for a followup soon after. All going well USA next year from August to November for a 6000 mile run - should be fun!!!!!!

Hi Perry,

I missed it too! Glad to hear everything continues to improve. I don't know how you keep up the pace you do (no pun intended). Needless to say I'm always impressed!

In a perfect treatment regimen, they would include post treatment dental care. Especially for those that dealt with all of the after effects from Interferon. I don't understand why they make dental care so expensive and difficult to obtain. It should be part of every healthcare policy and offer more than $1000 year maximums. That could be fuel for an entirely new discussion. I wish you luck getting that taken care of. Maybe you could find a sponsor???biggrin

It`s wonderful that you`re still going from strength to strength, you continue to amaze us all with your energy, commitment, and endurance!  I`m not sure how you do it, but I`m certainly very happy for you.

I`m with you on the teeth issues, I`m desperately trying to hang on to the ones I`ve got left!

Hi all - thought it was time to drop in and say hi. Almost 6 months since finishing tx. I continue to run and still averaging about 120 miles per week. In these last 6 months I,ve done 3 marathons ( 3hrs 37, 3 hrs 46, 3hrs 35 ) , a 48 hr run ( 200 miles) and 133 km ( about 80 miles) run so with that in mind I,ve bounced back pretty wekk from the gruelling 6 months of tx. Go in for next iron level test next week and see specialist on 17th Nov. It will be interesting to see if they have come down as they were double what they should be at end of tx. Also still having major teeth probs so its getting close to time to get what I,ve got left pulled - just have to win lotto first. Apart from that am getting right into life and planning next years big run. Will drop in everynow and again. take care all and look after yourselfs as much as you can,

Okay Perry, come clean, what planet are you from? You have shown us unlimited energy when you should have been in bed suffering the fatigue we all experienced. Not you though, you took that, turned it back on your attacker and kept running, literally! I'm going to give up wondering where you find the strength to do what you do. I'll accept the fact that you're one of a kind and be grateful I have come to know you. You are an example of something special indeed!

I'll start training, just in case. But I must admit, the only place I run to, are the Bank and the bathroom. It has been 15 years since I ran a mile or more, so a few kilometers may be asking a lot, lol! I imagine you could hop on one leg faster than I can run on two! Who knows though, you might inspire me! I do have my bike ready to go, just in case...

Keep it up Perry, your travels  and abilities keep us all wondering what's next, not to mention amazed and entertained. Stay safe and keep the updates coming!

Hi all. Just to let you know I completed the 132 ( bout 82 miles) run yesterday. Started just before midnight Friday night and finished mid-afternoon Saturday - appeox 15 hours on the roads. It was fun , it was hard but I kept smiling. The course was extremely hilly but the area is beautiful. It was a 66.3 km run but I started at the finish , ran to the start, had a coffee then headed back to the finish. The legs are a bit trashed today but they will get better . Its actually hard now to tell whether any of the pain or tiredness is connected to recovery or the running. Probably a bit of both. Bit of a rest now and had better get on with planning next years big adventure. You'll have to start training Tig so you can do a few kms with me. Take care all.

Congratulations on SVR and running for your sons day centre! I applaud you!! I only have 4 and a half days of clinical trial meds left and have been trying to stay active as I've done endurance events for years. I did a 22 k road ride today and am looking forward to getting back to running!! 

You are truly an inspiration:)

If I may chime in again Perry. While I am sure of the love and support that you receive is so mutually cherished by you and those who love you, no one can appreciate and truly understand what you are doing like those of us who have endured treatment. You are an extraordinary individual.

Should a day arise where inspiration and strength is needed you may want to read of another runners journey. His name was Terry Fox and he is a Canadian hero.

In my eyes, you are a hero too. Thanks for the inspiration! All the very best to you Perry.

Perry, congratulations, I am VERY HAPPY FOR YOU !!!!!!  Runners are the biggest part of our business.  What you are accomplishing is amazing, especially with all you have been through.  Contact Runner Magazine they would love your story.  I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who would be so inspired by your journey. If you were running on a circular track, the legs and hips can get out of sync. a little because of going in circles. Usually they change up direction quite a few times to give the inner or outer leg a break.  We work on some 70 and 80 year old endurance runners, and tons of 60 yr olds.  We haven't had any hep c people, but lots of other physical challenges. Everyone is motivated by those like you who are able to push yourself into what you love through physical endurance.  I was so bad my physical endurance was the car to the store door.

Well done, Perry!!  I`m totally in awe of your achievement, that`s really fantastic!!

You must have incredible strength of mind to have got your fitness level high enough to complete thiis marathon run while still in the process of recovery from treatment.

It`s wonderful that you were able to raise funds in this way for the benefit of your son`s day care centre.  Your family must be very proud of you, and actually so are we!!

Hi Perry,

Wow, that's incredible! I don't know how you do it. What a special thing to do in honor of your son! He's got one awesome Dad, you can tell him that for me, but I'm certain he already knows that. Your ability and will to persevere in light of the things you had to go through and must be experiencing still (to some degree), leaves me speechless and that's hard to do! Keep up the important work and continued luck with all of your running!

Hi all. Just a quick update on my latest running escapade!!!!!! At about 16 weeks EOT it was going to be interesting to see how I went on this - a 48 hour run around our local car racing circuit which is 3 km per loop. It was a fundraiser for my 22 year ols sons day centre he attends ( he has a very interlectual disability). I started at 8am Monday morning and finished 8am Wed morn. I made it to the 200 mile mark so happy with that. There is still recovery to go from the tx but getting there and now have to adjust my eating regime during these kind of events - I found I really need to have more than I used!!!! Now for a bit of rest before I attempt 132 kms in just over 2 weeks - the things I do for fun!!!!! Take care all,

Cheers all - thanks for all the kind words. yes Greg there were many times that I had to get my sorry a#@$#@# off the ground and kick it out the door. The so called wall that runners often talk about almost became my friend - there were many times we would meet on my daily outings but I got to the point where it was a " hi - hows it going and see you later!!!". At the end of the day the exercise helped me so much and it is really paying dividends now. I've still got that book to get onto again - there are many interesting chapters!!! take care all.

Hey Perry,

Congratulations Perry!! You worked long and hard to get this good news. You also ran all the way from start to finish without stopping! That was an ability you amazed us all with. You maintained a physical regimen most of us can't manage on a good day. I still think you have a big Red Superman tattoo on you somewhere and you've been messing with us the whole time, lol! If not, you should. I couldn't be happier for you mate. I'm a little disappointed though... You should've at least ran a full marathon over this good news. A 10 miler probably didn't even make you sweat, would've killed me! When you decide to make that cross country run here in the US, be sure to let us know. I want to be there to cheer you on! Good luck....

Just got results in - YES!!!!!! Bloods back in " normal" range. ALT and AST up a bit at 25 and 41 but I'm sure they fluctuate a bit. Went out and danced around a quite 10 miler. Onward and upward - take care all
