Robert, you are an inspiration! It seems like everything is going slow now, but just wait until you have that sweet new liver!

Howdy RC, thanks for checking in.

Your attitude will be that which pushes you to success. If I dare say, I have seen no greater warrior among us and we have a pretty tough crew!

God bless you and yours and keep your eyes on the prize.

Your Brother

So glad for your update. Thanks. Been wondering. Glad they are happy with their work

You said ... "looks like just a couple more pokes and prods this year, then just sit back and wait" ...

Man, master of understatement!!, and the patience only a fisherman could have!!

Who wants a trip to the cath lab ... but ...  I would sorely be wanting all preliminarys to be done and over with. Ducks in row, so to speak. (Ya, I know, easy for me to say)! What do you mean GI?- scope both ways for a looky-loo gastroscopy and colonoscopy?? My buddy is in for both next week as well, a repeat double-ender performance for him since his last one last year (he enjoyed the drug part). Only time there is no room for argument that I get to be designated driver - easy drive that one tho, only 2 - 3 hrs. away. I'm glad you explain to us how it works, MELD and system and all, as this is unfamiliar territory for me. I've read the same, HCV being done after LT - ideal, as you start drugging a brand spanking new well-perfusing organ instead of a bag of sour grapes. I just wish this system was not so "wearing" and labour intensive, it seems so grindlingy slow! On the other hand with such an investment in front of you, the mind needs time to accommodate and get your head around the idea. I have such a wonderful picture of you in my head, with a brand new start, and a truly healthy liver! Odometer, re-set to ZERO! Unlimited mileage.

My buddy was self-appointed designated driver again, (driving Miss Crazy) for the long trek over hill and dale today, moteling it tonight, for my doc appoint and VL draw tomorrow, I asked for a fibroscan this appointment, but we shall see if I get it. I will take another stab at trying to convince him to give me a req. for a repeat U/S, as my only imaging was my U/S a year ago pre-treatment, so I would really like another one!

We all know what my VL is going to be, as you kept your promise to me so very well, so no worries there. But don't you hold me up too long in letting me make good on my promise to you! You taught me ... a promise is a promise!

Really appreciated the update. smile C.

Wow, Robert.  You have been through soooo much!!! You seem to have an unlimited and admirable supply of strength and determination. I'm looking around for a magic wand, but it seems like all I can do is wish you the very best and support your movement forward. You deserve a significant break.

Here's to many fish on the end of your line and long time at it.

Hi all, Its been a while!!

Went back for MRI on 10-3-16. They got both tumors as verified by the MRI. The third tumor they could not identify , so they left it there and we will keep a watch on it. They are calling it L-Rad 4, just one notch from calling it HCC. So back in 2-3 months to see how its doing. For now I'm saying cancer free!!  On the same visit they started the Transplant work up, and I passed phase one, all the blood work and ultra sound looked good. The U/S was to check the veins that feed blood to and from the liver. They want to make sure the new liver has a good blood supply and so forth.  They commented that my liver had shrunken and looked like a bag of grapes, and the L/T was my only option!!   that was the first time i ever heard the word shrunken. That's a little harsh!  So i'm on the transplant list, and my meld score is probably 4 to 6.  Im well compensated so that's why the low score. However in 6 months i will get 28 points because of the HCC and my score will go from 4-6 to 28.  At around 30 you move up the list fast. I'm thinking the wait will be 12 to 18 months.  I just need to stay well compensated and i should be ok.   So now its off to phase two work up for L/T. its my understanding that means i get a lower GI. And the Dr has mentioned 3 times i will need a nuclear stress test AND a heart cath. They want to make sure i will be around a long time to enjoy the new liver!!   looks like just a couple more pokes and prods this year, then just sit back and wait.  as far as treatment for HCV-  not now-  they want to wait tell after the transplant. There the Doctors so im going to wait.  Fishing has been ok, nothing like the last couple of years, but ok none the less.  Hope to go out a couple times this week.  RC

Hey RC,

I'm happy to hear that you're not feeling too out of sorts today. You have made all of us confident that your healthcare team is taking every effort to provide you with the best care possible. That's important and we will continue to support you and Chris in every way we can.

Thanks for the update. I'm pleased with your progress and agree, if you can get started on HCV treatment, it will be a great benefit prior to the LT and after. Just keep checking those boxes and real soon you'll have nothing left to check except those fun items on your bucket list!

Rest up my friend, give Chris a hug for us and get ready to enjoy some of that world famous Washington Salmon fishing. One question though, does Chris make you clean em? LOL! Be well Brother...

Hi All, It's Monday morning and I want to report that this last double ablation is going really well. I'm feeling pretty good, Chris (ragdoll) has been keeping me down and quiet. I go back in early October for a MRI to see how they did on the last two burns, and to look at the one they couldn't get. I need an explanation as to what the spot is and what we are going to do about it. We will also start the L/T work up then.  Looking forward to some salmon fishing at the end of this week.   RC

It seems to be suddenly happening very fast for you and Ragdoll, which is a relief. I hope they get the 3rd one soon. That sounds a bit scary by the heart, but I'm sure they are going to get it soon enough!! Your journey is an incredible one that makes us all realize how dangerous this disease can be for some people. I'm so happy you are getting this resolved now, and lets hope that this is the beginning of a beautiful new recovery, as with your spirits and hopes, you deserve it and Ragdoll must be feeling the worries and stress of it all too.

Keep us updated, if it wasn't real, you wouldn't believe the journey you've had to endure.

Happy days are not far away! :D

Glad it was a good day!!!! Tig was right, they kick you out of there right away! Hey, good plan, CC driving, leaves your hands free for texting, which you do so well, thanks for updating us so quickly, but as this is RC on drugs, I am glad you are not behind the wheel!! So, how many more holes did you accrue? You test our anatomy knowledge again, heart near seg. 2? Stand on their heads time area? Nice you delivered the offending parts gift wrapped - made their job easier, and in turn, they will eventually make this job easier for you. DO rest ... you know the drill. What do they give a guy for pain?? Lay low, rest up, guard the fort and your abd. for a bit. A very good job you all made of it! smile C.

WOOHOO!! I second SF's motion, that's a great bit of news to start the weekend. We are all rooting for you RC and since we can't give you a hug or a handshake to congratulate you, I'm asking Chris to do that for us. Just make sure she pulls over first! Ha, ha!! Seriously good news Brother and 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Keeping an eye on #3 and then addressing it before it can cause any additional concerns, sounds like a good plan. Knowing your medical team is staying on top of every detail is comforting.

Hopefully the medication and positive results will make your ride back home more comfortable. Rest easy my friend and give Chris a hug too, when she pulls over! She deserves an award! We love you both, drive safe...

Hi All.    Had a good day yesterday!!     They got two out of three!   They got the big one in segment 5, the Dr said it was the size of a ping pong ball, that surprised me- I didn't think it was that big.  The  other one they got was in segment 2, the Dr said it was close to the heart? So I'm thinking the heart is kinda sitting on the top Left liver lobe?  Both these tumor's were capsulated so it helps the ablations process, I did my part by providing the tumors in a nice little wrapped package. (LOL).  The one in segment  8 was evident, but was not clearley  identified- they  could not clearley see it and said it was not clearley capsulated and decited to leave it for now. They just couldent get a good shot at it and it's only 1.2 cm.  I'm going back over in one month for a follow up MRI and we will see how that ones doing then. Were on the road now, ragdoll is driving, I'm a little medicated now. A few days on recovery from the ablations and then it's on to salmon fishing.  Thanks everyone for your kind words and prayers, they really help!!   RC. and the Ragdoll

Hello Chris and RC,

I`m so pleased that things are looking up at last, this all sounds very positive indeed!

We`ll be thinking about you on Thursday and hoping the surgery goes to plan and they get all 3 tumours, even if they do have to stand on their heads, or whatever else it takes!!

Very best of luck, and I have a feeling 3`s going to be your lucky number!

The procedure on Sept 8th and a couple days in the hospital afterwards? They don't keep us in any longer than they have to now. Just as well, I recover better at home anyway.

Keep us informed! Inquiring minds need to know...         Get er' done!

Good luck Brother  =>

thanks for letting us know Robert, you have been in the thoughts of many of us here.

We all have our fingers crossed, our prayer beads out and a couple of small altars set up with candles, incense and flowers. Go you microwaving dudes. Zap every single last cell and please try to avoid that juicy plump vein pulsating away near number 2.

Try to keep my friend in mind - he had one tumour ablated 16 months ago - there's now just a ghostly hole where it used to be.

Big hugs

Syd

You are in our thoughts and much braver than I would be. They will get these ones as well. Keep up the good fight.

Looking forward to your post post ablation  ...  Yes, I said that right

Hello all.

Have some news to report. I will be going over next week. (9-8-16) for a triple ablation. They are going to go after 3 tumors. There is one that they think will be a easy hit. There is one that they think is close to a big vein that could get a little tricky-it's in segment 5. And one in segment 2 that they may need to stand on there heads to get!!  So I'm thinking they will get two for sure, and hopefully all three.

They will be doing microwave ablation on all three- so may come home with 3 or 4 new holes in my abdomen. I'm going to need a calculator to add up all my puncture wounds!! LOL

         RC

RC,

theres tough and then theres you. Im not sure whether it would be better to have someone with a needle that big,,casually digging around or admitting defeat and passing the whole kit and Duce to the next person. So good though that with the accuracy of the beam,,they can just disappear.

Take care,

Syd

The vein did not sound so great but got it all, absolutely!

I would like to ask how they performed the ablation! I have read of a number of methods. Could you please enlighten me?

Thank you

SF

I like the sound of that "direct hit" stuff in your new report! "Got it all" sounds even better. I know you'll be chasing this for awhile, but it's very worth it my friend. Never stop chasing the Dragon, run it down and destroy it. Whatever it takes!

Hi Jimmy, Yes I remember one of your post where you stated that they had to go to your calf to get blood, so every time I go to get blood work I think of your situation and it makes my situation seem very insignificant.  It really doesn't bother me that I'm so hard to draw from. No big deal!!

Got the MRI report just now, the spot in segment 5 had grown to 2.0cm in last month or so, a couple other spots are mentioned, one has moved up from l-rad 3 to a 5. And one spot mentioned last time is not mentioned on this MRI report?   My Dr is out of town, so I will talk to him next week and see if we are going after the 2.0 cm in segment 5.   It would appear that I will be chasing these things in my liver for some time to come. That's ok with me, im not looking forward to a liver transplant. The ablation two weeks ago was a direct hit, looks like they got it all!!   Nothing more to report--- RC

Good they hit paydirt in the 4th zone. You were down to the 4th of the 4 preferred zones! Blown-up veins, and black and blue, the colors Wendy and I, and I think Jimmy (and likely as many others know). Ask Jimmy where they might have gone next for the 5th zone! They tend not to believe me, that out of the 4 preferred zones I should possess, they really only sport 1 1/2 chances of hitting paydirt there. Ug feeling, when after the first guys stab-a-rama, they call in the fresh, perhaps more experienced or lucky, confident expert #2 and he too soon adopts the grim look and fails too! You of all people would know how to instill perseverance in them dear.

Glad you got the MRI done. C.

This was a hard read! I think my lips turned white!

One of the problems is with regard to contrast. You can easily find pay dirt in my right calf or either ankle, but contrast needs to hit quickly to be effective. I had some radioactive stuff run into my left ankle once to do a Pet Scan and that appears to work well but if they run that stuff up me that tastes like a tin can it is less effective due to the leg thing.

Drawing from a leg is no problem. Running stuff into it not so much.

RC you remain my hero.

I have to say you always make me smile with your bad news RC. Only you can think about wonderful tasty food whilst most of us would be a quivering wreck! I also love the sound of your dream team, what a dedicated bunch of people. I hope you and Chris are having some relax time until it all goes crazy - enjoying your food too! :D Cyber hugs!

Hey RC,

Ditto on the ouch! Especially with a 16 gauge needle, that's a hose buddy, whew! Glad you got through the ventilation and MRI in good shape. The dinner in Seattle sounds nice. I used to love going into Seattle, it's a fun and fairly insane city. Go Seahawks!! That's my team!

Navigating those MRI's is fun isn't it? Scroll through all the various options, there are usually so many different views and planes that you can find one that makes sense. I do the same thing when I get my spine imaged and there are a lot of vertebrae to look at. When one looks just like the others, it makes for a long review.

Let us in on what the doc says when you hear something. You've got my ear anytime you two need it...

RC, this one's for you
