In 2014 when cirrhosis was causing me multiple problems, my doctor prescribed lactulose to lessen the amount of ammonia in my blood which causes hepatic encephalopathy. A positive side effect of lactulose is that it promotes good bowel movements and prevents constipation. Today my liver, although still cirrhotic, is compensating very well with no fear of encephalopathy but I still take low dose lactulose to avoid constipation caused more-so now by the HIV medications I take. You might ask your doctor if this would be a good option for you. The only negative side effect I've experienced is an increase in gas (flatulence) but that's really only a problem for others around me. lol

Thanks Hoodietree ,im trying pruns juice plus coloxyl pills and bit of yoga ,methadone has always been a problem ans im pretty sure i read somewhere epcluse can cause bit of constipation i think,anyway not too long to go now 3 mths goes fast .hope you are feeling ok thanks for your reply seems more i worry bout going to toilet worse i get lol take care great forum to talk about things..

I was allowed to take a stool softener (docusate sodium) while on Epclusa. It was a god send.  I was not on methodone just have suffered from constipation for years. Thank God for docusate sodium

Hi currently doing epclusa treatment 21 days to go im 65 yrs old geno 3 ,i have been on methadone 4yrs and get constipation iv noticed the epclusa seems to have made constipation worse any body else noticed this.thanks.

Ditto on whats been said already. He should do it now so when he decides to kick the methadone he's in good health. When that day comes he will need to have everything in his favor.

Like the guys say, it's no problem at all.  In fact, he's an ideal candidate for treatment - if HCV positive - as it would lower the risk of spreading the virus.

I'm so glad services have moved forward these days and are treating IVDUs.  I'm pretty sure one of the reasons I was refused treatment 15 years ago are so was because of how I got HCV.

Hi Miriam,

I was on Methadone throughout treatment, albeit on different drugs than we see now. I experienced no problems and everyone involved were all on board with it. I wouldn't expect any problems.

I checked the interactions betweem Harvoni, Epclusa and Methadone just for comparisons and there were none. Each patient may be different, so his doctor will do a full workup before considering a treatment regimen. It's all part of the process and I encourage your friend to get in and get started.

Greetings.

 

The short answer is yes your friend can be treated while on Methadone. Just have to get with the Doctor to determine the treatment plan. All the same criteria applies. GenoType, VL, Fscore etc.

I was on Methadone about 30 years or so ago. It does not hurt the Liver which is a good thing. Treatments with RBV are becoming more scarce so first things first is getting with the Doctor.

I usually post for myself  but this is for a friend  who does not have a computer. I know that this group has so many answers. 

Q

He has hep c and is on methadone.  He says his program  wants him to go for testing.  How do I guide him?  He is on medicaid.  Is there a drug  that works well with  methadone?  I am on Harvoni and it seems to be working for me.  I don't think that mentally he could handle the sides of ribaviron.
