I worked in public schools also while undergoing TX and did NOT get the cold or flu--but OMG I did get streph throat and thought I was going to die. It was the only time I missed an entire week of work. And I know which kid gave it to me-- LOL. But I did recover with the help of antibiotics and ice cream.

I have had a little URI recently, but everyone in my neck of the woods have had it.  I do believe my symptoms are less than others with teh chest cold.  Other than I have been healthy and miserable!

can't resist sharing the following that occurred during the end of my career. well it all started w/ about 50 warts on my hands from the kids, then the flu,and finally tons of antibiotics. well i said to myself, i'll just start wearing gloves to protect myself. sure enough parents were up in arms & i had to get a drs. note to prove i wasn't contagious. throw me some more lemons and i can make gallons of lemonaide!!!!!

Nothing like people to make you feel good! Poor thing, you have my empathy! I had a wart on my finger once caught at the gym, I had it frozen off and that hurt! Look after yourself!

I think that I"ve only gotten a cold/flu once in the 15 months since EOT. However, I am more sequestered than average since retirement, and certainly more so, than when I was working in detentions/corrections facilities. I do get an annual flu shot, maybe it works, maybe not, but it at least someone else is doing the 'shooting'.

I haven't had a cold or flu for years. I regularly get my flu vaccine but didn't this year due to treatment. My white count got real low and I've been taking Neupogen, twice a week for quite awhile now. My Hepa was real concerned about my susceptibility to infection when that happened. Haven't had a CBC in a quite awhile either, next week will most likely be my time for more lab work. I'm glad you mentioned the Hep A & B vaccines, I need to get that done too. This was a good idea for a thread! Very informative smile

Thanks Malcolm,

Had my Hep B vaccine in1999 when I was diagnosed with HepC.  Had Hep A in 1958 so didn't require that.  I was not aware that the vaccines don't last.  I'll get it checked after treatment.

Hi Bill,

I also did not get a cold or 'flu' while on treatment, but I didn't get out much!  Both Interferon and Ribavirin have general antiviral action.  In fact, one of the first uses of Ribavirin was as a Rx for flu, but it was mostly used in Mexico. I'm sure these 2 drugs play some part.

After Rx we did a trip to China and Europe. For the first time, I had a flu vaccination, as my poor immune system was probably in a bad way. I also repeated my HepA and HepB vaccinations, as these antibodies were undetectable. I last had them back in the 1980's, and they don't last long. It's a good idea to get your HepA and HepB status checked and get revaccinated if required. Cheers.

Just curious.  I work in the schools and so does my wife.  Needless to say we are especially exposed to colds/flu viruses and lots of sick kids.  (Esp my wife who works with preschoolers)

During my treatment - 47 weeks now - I have not gotten sick with any colds or flu.  Despite feeling lousy on most days and barely dragging myself into work (and away) some days, I have not been sick with a cold or the flu.  Usually I will get a cold or two or three during the year.  Yes I did get my flu shot last year and this year also.  However not having colds has been pleasant.  Would trade the side-effects of the tx for a cold any day!

Anyone else have any thoughts or experience with this?  Or an opinion or some facts on this?  I was just wondering if the anti-virals in the treatment might work on other viruses as well.

Just curious.
