Hey Harry,

sounds like you have arthritis in that knee... boo hiss... so sorry to know you have that going on ... on top of your numb feet and droppy hands.  A few years ago my Dr told me I am allergic to beef and pork...I was not pleased because I love beef although I only ate it a few times a week... I listened to him and stopped and if you can believe it.... the pain and swelling from my arthritis  reduced by about 75%... I was not expecting that to be a side effect of quitting a food.

Can you have allergy testing done...at an immunologist?  Perhaps an allergy or sensitivity could explain some of your symptoms ...my husband just turned 70 today (he didnt ever  have HCV ) and his.. *getting old *..aches and pains are pretty minimal

I sure hope you get to feel better Harry, you deserve it.

Hey Harry,

Sorry for getting back to you so late! It has been so quiet here, I find myself missing some updates.

I'm so grateful to know the fires are diminishing, but far from gone. I guess we have to be hopeful that small advances will bring bigger ones. I'm so sad to read and hear of all the loss of your wildlife and forested areas. What a freakin disaster for your country. I heard that we recently lost one of our C130's and her crew in a crash related to the firefighting efforts. I used to weld all of the lubrication tanks for those engines. I know how incredibly  tough those planes are. I know those pilots and crew members gave it all they had to help.

You're wise to keep close attention to your balance when your legs and feet are numb. I had a weird situation arise recently on that same line of thought. I was outside and here in Florida, our state bird is the Mosquito, ha! I was watering some plants out front and all of a sudden my numb leg started to burn like mad. When I looked down, there were several Mosquitoes biting me in an area the size of an egg. The blood was running down my leg! I'm a Mosquito magnet anyway and now I can't even feel the initial bite. Apparently I'm not numb enough to not feel the itch. Evil winged creatures!

Just remember to hold onto that coffee cup. I understand in some circles (Navy), it's a sin to drop a cup of coffee, lol! Hang tough my Brother, life is full of surprises that we have yet to experience. Coffee will keep us alert enough to remember them. wink

Yes! Buckets of rain would be the perfect Christmas gift for your country, Harry.

This really does put the awe of firework into perspective. It's a cheap thrill for a split second, but these results continue.

I like what your perspective: "just got to appreciate the victories hopefully the problems will sort themselves out!"  Banging our heads against the wall rueing what we can't affect is normal, but bruising.

Take the best care you can, Harry.  And listen to Obs; take the magnesium.

Best to all,

Cheddy

Hi Harry,

I wish we could convince the good Lord and Mother Nature to drop about a foot of slow, steady rain on you. Fires are among the most damaging of all disasters. It’s hard to imagine how long and devastating these fires have been for you. I agree, the use of fireworks after all you’ve been through is ridiculous. All because they want to continue some sort of tradition off the bridge. Australia seems to be one of the first to display the New Year celebration. After all the problems and losses, you’d think common sense and the expense of the celebration would sink in. The decision makers rarely use their brain in situations like these. It’s all about the show I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Stay inside and avoid going out, when possible. It’s a good time to binge watch some good movies!

Merry Christmas, Brother!

Awww Harry so sad for your homeland. Canada sent some firefighters to help...

I feel so scared and sorry for the wild life as well as the people.

i cant believe the government would waste money on fireworks  furious personally I think those things should be banned everywhere...bad for pets and bad for people with ptsd and bad for wildlife...and really do we need to ignite and blast more chemicals into our precious world for ten minutes of oooooos and ahhhhhhhhhs? I think not

anyhoo, take care dear Harry have a nice holiday season

hi harry, it's sooooooooo hard to believe it's still so hot and smokey.... and i agree. the government should put that money toward helping the ppl going thru the stress of the smoke already.

do you have air conditioning at all?

merry christmas and may the new year bring you wellness and clean cool air.

Thanks Guru for kind thoughts appreciate them. Yes the fires are pretty bad this year ,seems like been breathing polluted air for weeks now keeping doors windows closed in hot weather isn't much fun,the hot weather seems to make asthma worse especially with smoke in the air it's 11 pm Thursday night had a very hot day, tomorrow is supposed to be over 100deg ,I'm sitting here wondering if I should take the pulmicort turbohaler ,I hear different things about steroid inhalers some good some bad for me seems to have made me swell Up a bit but suppose to make breathing easier, trouble is I feel so bloated on abdomen I'm sure it's effecting lungs , plus I read where it can cause infections my dr is on holiday so he isn't much help lucky dr Google is available ,anyway thanks again ,enjoy your nice cool climate an take care ,I think Tig is right seems older you get more hassles get thrown at us ,just got to appreciate the victories hopefully the problems will sort themselves out! I'm suppose to have heart stress test done on Monday ,I had to cancel appointment i had last week as it was really hot an smokey didn't feel like riding exercise bike or treadmill in heat, but unfortunately I think Monday is going to be heatwave ,at least it's in the morning.take care Harry.

Tig,

I know I sound like a broken  record but do you take magnesium glycinate?

It is soooooooooo important for the nervous system... google it if you dont believe me wink

A deficiency can cause numbness and tingling and cramps.

I also find my sciatica troubles me when my nervous system is struggling but the magnesium glycinate pretty much eliminates that.

Harry,

I am so saddened by the fires in Australia...I hope both the smoky fires and your breathing both ease soon.

Hows it going after taking yourself off the steroid inhaler?  Is it even harder for you to breathe without it?

I know they are a useful medicine but I had a very tough time on steroids....it made me manic and I got the fattest face...hmm

Hi Harry,

I agree, it’s most definitely something nerve related. Neuropathy is most likely going to be the diagnosis. What baffles me is how fast it happened. It developed over a matter of days. I’ll get it figured out, but am sure it’s a combination of things. It seems there are more things falling apart than resolving, but believe it’s a lot to do with age. We have to keep fighting for the improvements we desire and enjoy each victory, however small or large. You know what I’m saying!

Sorry to hear about the continuing wildfires. We get them here occasionally, but not like you describe. Our state of California has had severe fires each year, for years. Catastrophic fires, with loss of life and property. The harm to your breathing is well documented. If you’re able, get a larger AC unit, you need to consider the expense as a required one. Maybe with the one you have, another smaller, more affordable unit will be possible. We have central air conditioning here. It’s so hot and humid most of the time, we require it. So I can totally understand how uncomfortable you must be.

I have no doubt that the steroid spray has an effect on your weight gain. That tends to cause us to plump up a bit! Don’t feel alone, I’ve got that same 6 month belly now. When exercising gets difficult, things settle! These medications can cause unwanted side effects, while curing at the same time. Hopefully finishing them allows our body to recover. We can hope anyway!

I just purchased a hunters game camera this week. I’m setting it up adjacent to my feeding area out back. I hope to see what kind of critters we have lurking around our back door! I’ll post anything good when they come around.

Hi Tig,hope your enjoying nice cool weather over there, looks like it's going to be a really hot summer over here ,I think there's a record number of fires in my state ,and summer has just started,we've had to keep windows doors closed to keep the smoke from fires outplus it stinks it's been about 6 weeks now being really hot doesn't help ,my daughter lent us a portable air con but seeing our place is fairly open inside the air con isn't much relief ,need some rain ,IV been doing some reading about peripheral neuropathy I guess you've heard of it,I read where one of the symptoms is numbness I found interesting as I get tingly numbness ,I'm going to try find out bit more info ,I could relate to some symptoms in article ,lot of people having breathing problems due to fires including myself ,I'm really confused don't know if my breathing problems caused from the breathing inhalers I'm on dr recently put me on cortasteroid called pulmicort turbohaler,IV been on it for 2 mths it doesn't agree with me Iiv put on heaps weight on abdomen ( (look 6 mths pregnant ) I stopped taking it 2 days ago or maybe being caused by pinched nerve ,what ever is effecting breathing is a pain ,every time try to make appointment with my GP his on a holliday again.anyway Tig thought I'd mention the neuropathy ,take it easy watch those bears.Harry

Ooo Tig what a treat to see!

I agree stick to only daytime feeding for the birds and bring in any uneaten foods...

we have to do that with our bird feeding...I sweep up the husks and any fallen seeds and my hubby dutifully brings the suet in every evening ...not because of bears but because of raccoons.  They are very destructive...killed (but didnt eat)  almost all my goldfish ..... I had 4generations numbering about 50 in my various ponds... I have two left disbelief with a cage/fence around their pond to protect them.  Raccoons are so nasty I actually leash my dog when he needs a pee at night...(I love him but hes not the brightest dog and has been sprayed by our local skunk family more than once, so I dont trust him not to challenge the raccoons)

my dog is so driven by crazy instincts he actually smashed his way through our sliding glass door with his head to get at a squirrel evileye

Speaking of my animal/bird feeding area out back, last night my wife let out a gasp and I hobbled over to the lanai sliding glass doors. Not 20 feet away, was one of the biggest black bears I’ve seen down here and her cub. The Momma Bear was drinking out of the bird bath, now I know why it’s always empty in the morning! The cub climbed the tree I had a bird house hung on and promptly tore it off the tree. They had eaten all the bird and squirrel food, so I decided to make some racket. Thankfully she took the cub and ran into the woods behind us. I guess I better change my feeding schedule to daytime only! It was very interesting to see in my backyard, but.... yikes! I was about to go out there. You don’t want to get between a bear and her cub! Kind of cool to see though.

Cheddy! You can’t be doing that stuff now. I’ve broken more bones than I can count on two hands! Not fun at all. It takes longer to recuperate, or don’t you know that? You were playing on the monkey bars again, weren’t you? Get well and heal soon!

Harry, the Snowbirds I commented on are actually the seasonal human residents that drive down here to Florida from all points North. When it gets cold in our northern states, they travel down here and drive slow in the passing lane. However, we are on a large migration route and get to see all kinds of birds. I have a feeding area on the back of our property and it attracts all kinds of wildlife. I saw a raccoon sit on top of my squirrel feeder last night. It hung off the tree and feeder, with one hand dipping into the food. This morning, all of the food is gone. At least it left the feeder intact! I love all animals and most people! wink

OMG Cheddy ...you broke your arm? Poor you! What happened?  what bone broke?  the closest Ive come to breaking an arm bone was fracturing my elbow while vacuuming (doesnt everyone stand on a chair to vacuum?)

Ive broken toes and had lots of torn muscles/tendons but have luckily avoided having a broken arm or leg..

Tig... Im so sorry your numbness is getting worse and the burning...sure sounds nervous system related...

can you get any advise from Drs? Can you have a massage? Or acupuncture? What happens if you Apply heat? Cold? Anything that changes it at all?

harry, we are getting wind and rain here in Vancouver...and a few days of frost on the lawns in the mornings...I just had my snow tires put on because it will probably snow here soon.

I wish we could share some of our rain with you Aussies ...my driveway was flooding yesterday

I live in a delta where the birds stop for a few weeks on their migration and we have had about 20,000 snow geese in the farmers fields in the day...(got some great photos) and flying in long strings across the sky in the evenings.

Wow, Tig. No answers for your numbness? What's the nest step? I'm so sorry you are going through this.

I broke my arm, my first break ever.  I was lucky I didn't break my neck but I'm very impatient. Time will do the trick again.

my hubby has his 'creatine kinase' tested every few months...... if he over does physical exercise or work it goes up.... he thinks it's a lot worse since tx and was told to call gilead and let them know.

and he has a lot of muscle and joint pain. has to take small doses of pain meds a few times a week.

he has always been an active athletic type so maybe that makes it worse ; years of over use :(

Hi Harry,

I thought it was better to catch up here instead of the chatbox. The numbness persists and is getting worse. It’s weird, just the outside half of my legs and feet. It burns at night, in spite of being dead numb. This getting old stuff is for the birds! I have to get in and schedule some tests, but getting in this time of year can take a week or three. We are in Snow Bird season and the seasonal residents flock in like geese. Oh well, it keeps the economy going!

The discomfort you’re having has been mentioned in the past. I don’t recall the names, but some people with other health concerns here, did complain of extended recovery times. The good thing is, it improved tremendously. Keep your spirits up and don’t let it get to you! We can share stories as we strive for improvement. As long as we keep trying, we keep moving forward.

Have you increased your fluids (as much as you’re allowed) or added some electrolytes to your regimen? Might help the ache. Another thing, are you eating right? If you’re not getting the protein and carbs you need, your body will suffer. We have a milkshake product called Ensure. It is an excellent supplement. Good luck, mate!

Harry,

Are you drinking enough water?  One time when I spent a week in high temperatures in an arid climate, I swelled up like crazy.  The locals told me it's a response to your body wanting to hold onto water, so I skipped the salt and increased my fluid intake.  This may not be the case for you, but I thought I'd pass it on.  Of course when you're sweating a lot you need electrolytes, including salt.

Yep, you've had to put up with plenty. I hope you learn more from your doctor tomorrow. Keep moving forward.

Best of luck,

Ceddy

Hi ,well not even summer yet the fires here are pretty bad ATM we really need some rain. This hot weather seems to have increased my abdominal swelling, which could explain my shortness of breath maybe ,must be like carrying a spare tyre around ,I had some frusimide dr prescribe me last year ,has any body had this weight gain on abdomen and treated with frusimide ? I have stress test with heart dr tomorrow, kinda hope abdominal swelling is causing shortness of breath and not heart complications,IV really had enough complications ,Tig how's the numbness going hope improving for you ,I guess the weather would be nice where you are,IV had these 100 deg days, and summer hasn't started, really think the heat is hard on ailments, take care everyone. Harry

G'day Tig,yes seems like fires are everywhere ATM ,I'm about 10 miles from nearest fire, the smoke is a problem and staying indoors with windows doors closed plus temp is in90s ,seems rediculous trying to quit cigarettes with so much smoke in the air ,IV been getting a few stabbing type pains lately almost like a cramp or muscle spasm only lasts few minutes seems to happen if reaching or stretching or drying yourself after shower, apparently asthmatics sometimes get it or coughing too much I read somewhere, anyway Tig take care of yourself ,your not alone on this crazy trip ,,Greg made some interesting points about socks ,I don't like much ok in winter if comfortable don't like if tight and leave a ring around your ankle cutting circulation,IV been trying to elevate legs couple times day to help circulation .

Hi ya'll,

Thanks again for all the great responses. I'm surprised at how fast it all occurred. I haven't had anything like this happen in the past, outside of the constant discomfort from the back and hips. The numbness, especially being so uneven, is perplexing. How the heck does just half of each leg and foot/toes go dead and the other half is just fine? Weird. It has to be the lower back that's firing it up, but honestly, I've been in the medical field most of my life and never heard of this half and half stuff before.

Hey Obs, the feeling of a lumpy sock comes with or without socks or shoes, but really is noticeable when I do wear them. Strange feeling. Kind of like that shock or surprise when you step on a wet hairball from the cat. One minute you're motoring around in good shape and then you take a step and you know right away, there's something under your foot! It's not a painful thing, just annoying and startling. I'm about as used to it as I ever want to be and hope for improvement, knowing it probably isn't coming. The lumpy feeling is always under the heel and on the numb half. Very strange indeed!

Hey Harry, I've been watching the news about your fires and it doesn't look very healthy. Sorry you're having to deal with it. We've had our own fires and California is in a bad way because of them. The speed they can obtain is mind blowing! Hopefully we'll all get a break from them soon. With your lung issues, do your best to avoid the smoke. Hard to do when it's coming from all angles.

Yikes Tig!

how annoying and scary. I agree with Cheddy, it sounds way more nervous system related than arthritis.... specially with your history of problems in/from your back.

and ummmm isnt arthritis defined as swelling and pain in joints and I doubt you magically have joints on your calves. If it was just the toes and they were swollen and painful Id agree with your Dr but its numb...big difference ! Btw..that feeling with your sock that would drive me nuts ...I rarely wear socks

Acupuncture might be worth a try, massage of course, even some qigong might be worth the effort

Take care Tig

Tig ,sounds same as I get must be arthritis or nerve pain ,ok so how can it be fixed, that always slows them down when asked !we have fires over hear atm ,plus hot days doesn't seem to help numbness, will keep trying to find out what's going on ,my dr said to me oh you smoked for yrs can't expect not to have problems ,said stress test could show circulation problem maybe it could,I'm stressing about the heart stress test ,lol then diabetes can be passed on my mother got when in 60s,so sick of getting tested ,will let you know if I hear of any thing that may help your numbness,I often get stabbing pains, as well ,anyway take care of yourself will let you know if I hear anything ,you've probably heard before ,reckon we've done ok so far still on planet.

Thanks for the input everyone. It’s a strange sensation and hard to ignore on a good day! I’m leaning toward a combination of old HCV damage, compounded by my already damaged spine. I hate to admit it but, something did something, lol! wink I know Harry has had some issues with numbness, maybe he’ll check in.

I realize it’s a real problem for those of us that were infected for decades and experienced Interferon and Riba, then the first NS3-4’s, Victrelis and Telapravir. Remember those beauties? How could we ever forget?!?

Not an expert by any means but I agree with Cheddy. Never had the nerve thing but several years ago I stopped wearing socks that cinch tightly around my calfs, fit loosely. Made sense that maybe good thing for circulation. I always wear loose slip on shoes too. Runners with lases not tight.

After treatment had hard time with itchy spaces between my toes, drove me nuts. It wasn't athletes foot. Some of the itchy spots had little scabs...scabs weren't from me scratching the areas and my thought was they were a consequence of my hep c treatment, even though it was years after treatment. Anyways doctor gave me a steroid cream I think or did I get it over the counter at the drug store? lol memory is gone but it was 1% Hydrocortisone- Anti itch cream plus moisturizer. Did the trick for the itch after most of a 30 gram (1 ounce) tube.

I hope this helps friend. Cheers.

Hey Tig!  Well that sucks.  That sounds like nerve pain to me.  It may be time to try another route, like acupuncture, chiro, or a really good PT. As I understand arthritis, that's usually pain and not numbness (?). At any rate, you want to get the flow back to those nerves.  Does walking, stretching, massage make it better or worse?

I hate to see this happen to you. You are much appreciated around here and we want you well. Seriously.

Okay, I've got to ask for your opinion, whomever has one! Over the last two weeks, aside from the increasing pain in my neck and lower back, another problem has developed. It started with my left leg, sharp, knifing pain in the left hip socket, radiating down into my left quadracep and knee. Saw the doc, he did X Rays and said arthritis. No sh*t Sherlock, I didn't need to come here to know that! All he wants to do is more tests on top of more tests. The deductibles are ridiculous. I've had more MRI's and X Rays than most people will have in 10 lifetimes. Seems to me they are simply testing for something to do. I'm really starting to get concerned about all of the radiation I've had passed through my body.

Anyway, over the last 2-3 weeks, I developed bad numbness in my left calf and foot. I mean dead numb! The odd thing and what brings me to ask for an opinion, is the fact that it only effects the outside half of my leg, not the inside, just the outside aspect of the calf and foot. My little toe and the one next to it are dead, the other three and the inside of my foot is just fine. I've never heard of neuralgia just affecting part of the leg and foot. So I'm a bit perplexed, because now the exact same thing has happened to my right leg and foot! Exact same thing. When I put my shoes and socks on, it feels like my socks are in a big wad under my foot. I have taken my shoes and socks off dozens of times now, because I'm convinced there must be something there, only to find out there's nothing there. Talk about irritating! The worst is the spaces between those numb toes, itch like hell. Nothing there to see.

Before I make another trip to the doctor, I thought I'd ask my good friends here what they think and if this has ever happened to you. Opinions welcome! Thanks.

Oh, don't even get me started on the reckless behavior I enjoyed back them. I'm no angel now. I think I still have a pirate's heart but I really love being healthy, mostly for vitality's sake.

I am sooo glad your heart is good, Big (as if we didn't know that metaphorically) but am concerned about the rest.  Please promise to do your best. We love you here and you are needed by many.

Tig,so true about being young an bullet proof ,ha ha. The government over here has decided to increase price of cigarettes packet of camel or marlbora at least $55.00 $60.00 or a 25gram of rolling tobacco$40.00, plus they sell them all in yummy dark brown packets no brands  on packets that you can see easily only health warnings with gross pictures on them the gov must be making a heap on taxes, don't know if has made any difference to amount of people smoking.vaping nicotine is illegal over here as well, I remember the first car I had my stepfather who I always thought was a crook lined me up to get a mini van off one of his sleazy friends and I could pay it off about $700.00 in those days was a fair bit of money Trouble is it wasn't till I signed all the papers that I realised it was an ex pest control vanhad the most disgusting smells probley DDT and what ever poisons they were allowed to use in those days ,was impossible to get rid of nasty odours even going through car washes.I had ccar for about 6months before it rusted away, I often wonder what kind of poisons we breathed in driving and sleeping in this dam pest control van,it wouldn't be allowed on the road these days.was kinda glad to see the end of it,but we weren't really clued up on dangers of poisons in those days, just wanted to be on the road and maybe go to the drve in now an again.take care have nice weekend

Hey Harry,

I'm rather fond of that old saying as well, "what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger". It has certainly applied to me personally on more than one occasion! The truth of that though, in retrospect, makes me believe that saying applied better when we were in our 20's and 30's, back when we all felt like we were bullet proof. All those stupid, reckless and fun things have now come home to roost! Ha, ha! I did smoke, a lot, but quit back in 1990, so I probably had a smoking history of 1-2 packs of Camel Filters for 20 years, thereabouts. I have never had trouble before, XRays were always good, no emphysema, asthma, but I have suffered with bronchitis over the years and a few bouts of pneumonia. Nothing more than most people. I guess it's a cumulative thing. I worked in the welding field for decades and breathed in a lot of fumes. Lots of chemical exposure, unintended consequences of making a living in an industrial world. I also have an old brass Zippo that I got decades ago in the Navy. No inscription on it, but I still find myself using Brasso polish on it, those old Navy habits die hard.

Obs,

Good grief! That soy allergy is terrible. I never imagined how many things they use that stuff in. I envision you in one of the bubble rooms, but then we find out they made the bubble out of a soy product! Yikes!! I'm so glad you found out quickly and got those sheets replaced. Sounds like you're snoozing a whole lot better, hooray for that.

Hi Harry, yes soy is used in sooooooooooooo many things....from dog collars to automotive wiring casings.disbelief

Because of my allergies I have researched it a lot and I am horrified at the amount of products it is in....  I dont touch newspapers because of the soy based ink but I never thought about the dyes in  sheets (and clothes probably too)

I have always tried to eat organic foods when I can access them...  my children were never allowed to eat at McDonalds ....and used to whine that they wanted to eat like normal kids do....now they thank me for protecting them from the scourge of big unscrupulous agriculture.

People still complain to me about the higher cost of organic foods  ....  I always tell them illness costs more.

Monsanto ...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Dont get me started on them furious

Tig your heart IS good   Sorry about the hip, lungs and spine

Iris

Good news for me from all my sheet debacle ...I got white organic cotton sheets and have been sleeping really well, my arthritis and all my other symptoms that were triggered have calmed right down. I realized Ive always slept (or tried to) on coloured sheets and they probably all have soy dye so I have been always exposing myself to 8 hours a night of soy for ever. No wonder I have had hives for 5 years and insomnia etc... so it may be a really good discovery I have made smile  Thanks for caring friends...
